When I go up to my roof terrace in the quiet hours of an early morning and gaze at the sweeping views from east to west, under the vast expanse of the blue sky, I take a deep inhale and feel my heart quicken and then come to tranquillity. I salute with humility and take my symbolic step onto the site of my Taiji practice.
When I greet the smiling faces of my students as they tumble cheerfulness and camaraderie into the hall, and join me in a welcoming cup of hot jasmine tea, I am energized and hope in turn to share the good Qi in store for us all, as we go through our routines and new learnings.
When we stand deeply grounded to the green canopied earth of the park - loose limbed, quiet mind, peaceful heart - and sway with the gentle breezes flowing around us, listening to the rustling murmurs of the trees surrounding us, or the chirping of our little winged friends, we are then all connected and at one with nature.
When I am calm and focused... allowing my limbs to soften... aware of groundedness, transfers of weights and energy, expansion and contraction... engaging in slow deep breathing... feeling energy rise and fall... finding grace and balance in the beauty of the flowing movements... continuing without pause until the form is done - then I feel a deep serenity, like happiness, and a thankfulness to my mother, to my taiji friends, and to all the other teachers who have taught me so well.
